Penny Auction Haram?
October 21st, 2009 by M!

penniesHi all, it’s been too long since M! updated this blog, more than a month ago lol. Anyway, recently M! stumbled upon a website called Penny Auction, Malaysia’s version. Okay, most of you out there are already familiar with this kind of sites as it was made famous  for couple of years now. But what M! want to write is about the local version which just made famous lately.

So what it is? This penny auction crap site is a an auction site which is very similar to lottery. Why? Because in order to bid for something (most of the time they list  very lucrative items) you must first buy your bids. Wth??? Yup you have to buy bids in  order to bid for something. 1 bid cost you RM2, yikes.

All the bids are not refundable, yes if you loose you lost all. Ring a bell anyone? This is strictly no hiding at all is an online lottery. In Islam you can’t gamble, but still M! see there are nicks bidding there that are Muslim’s names. Now, M! is  not going to judge you about this , and M! is also not the right  person to make any law about this but M! hope our Ulama’ will make a stand for this matter. Is it haram or not to use this kind of auctions.

But whether it is haram or not M! see that there is no way you can win the auction unless you have a super duper fuhkin luck.  You just help the owner of the site get more rich just by buying more bids. Let M! give you an example, an Iphone  3G was sold for RM170.00 1 bid is RM2 (RM2 is an increment for 0.01) so, 170,00 x 2= ???? For an Iphone that cost about RM2500, the company can make a very sweet profit! So the next time you want to buy bids for any penny auctions site, remember there is always a free method to bid although the prices there are not as lucrative as the “phony auctions”  site lol.

you are correct about the fact that the owner will make more money, but have you though about the fact that you can get a iPhone for less than 200.00. Yes it depends on luck but don’t everything requires a little bit of luck ie. fishing, farming, running a business, etc.

slimfox you completely missed the point. It’s NOT AN AUCTION. A real auction is where only the winner must pay anything. The rest leave empty handed but no less poorer. This is nothing but a lottery where people ante purchased tokens at a chance of winning. The more tokens one buys the higher their chances but the system is setup in such a way that there is a big house advantage in the token system. The average site earns at least 200-300% of MSRP. Only the winner leaves happy. The rest lose all the money spent on the bids.

An easy example is selling a car in real life. Start bids at 1 dollar. Anyone can pay the auctioneer 1 dollar more than the previous person to be the current winning bid. People keep incrementing their bids without realizing the flaw in the system. It’s not zero-sum. People as a collective lose more than they put in.

Just count cards in 21. At least you will win some money guaranteed before you get banned.
